An estimated 4.5 percent of U.S. adults identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender(LGBTQ), that’s roughly 11.3 million Americans. It is found Washington, D.C., had the highest percentage of LGBTQ people at 9.8 percent and North Dakota had the lowest at 2.7 percent.
Mostly younger people are likely to live as LGBTQ and to identify that way because they are growing up in a time when it’s more acceptable to acknowledge those feelings and to act on them.
Today, solid majorities of Americans support laws and policies focused at reducing discrimination against LGBTQ people. People have come to understand that the strength and the success of our communities and our economy depend on the diverse talents and skills of all people. Equality makes us stronger . When all people have been treated fairly including those who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender—it benefits everyone.
Despite that, it’s still legal in most states to deny people housing or refuse to serve them in a restaurant or other business—simply because they are gay or transgender. However, a historic decision was written last year by The U.S. Supreme Court where workers cannot be fired for being gay or transgender in a blockbuster win for members of the LGBTQ community. While workers in about half the country were protected by local laws that prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity, there was no federal law that explicitly barred LGBTQ workers from being fired on that basis. Nevertheless, more than half of LGBTQ people still lack basic civil rights protections because they live in a state without them.To be specific, it is still legal in most states to deny people housing, refuse to serve them in a restaurant or other business, or allow taxpayer-funded programs to
turn away people simply because they are gay or transgender. The United States has made important progress in extending equal rights to LGBTQ people, but we still have a long way to go. We’re standing up against LGBTQ people being discriminated .Its morally wrong and deeply harmful.
The United States is known as the land of opportunity, where one could achieve anything they put their mind into, no matter who they are. One of the many reasons America is such a great country is the diversity you see all around . Its a place where people who work hard, follow the law, and meet their responsibilities have a chance to get ahead and make a positive difference. It’s time to make sure that this vision is a reality for LGBTQ Americans—and for everyone.
